THE BATTLE OF THE BIG SLOPE
STEVE TAYLOR

Despite defeat on our first awayday to Wakefield, we have a lot to be proud of from our trip 'up north'. We knew from the outset that with our depleted team this game would test our character, and the brave Brighton bravehearts didn't disappoint. For the first half hour we defended like our lives depended on it and managed to thwart the Terriers onslaught, despite the slope of the pitch being against us. Then Yorkshire finally broke the Bandits' resolute defence, scoring a cleverly worked goal. When the persil-white ref blew for half-time, we were well satisfied going in just a goal down (he must use Omo to clean that kit!).

After some delicious half-time bananas (with Gary puffing on a fag!) we went out, crossing the white line full of energy and vigour (well maybe not, more like shattered from keeping the score down against the slope). We started the second half well and fought off the Yorkshire lads' determination with splendid team spirit and commitment. It took two fantastic goals to breach Brighton's efforts, one from a tight angle on the right and the other from the edge of the Bandits penalty area.

It may sound from this report that we didn't enter the Yorkshire half, but occasionally we did, with Paul and Andy working tigerishly up front and showing some guile. Special mention must go to Theo in goal, pulling off some terrific saves, Jason in midfield was superb, as was Brian at the back. All the players deserve credit for their dogged (or doggy!) performance, which bodes well for the next game. Special thanks to Martin and Terry for playing for the Bandits as subs - we wouldn't have survived the whole game without you! Although we have not registered any points on the board, it is surely only a matter of time when we do judging from our displays so far.
