And marvellous it was. We went into this game on the back of two consecutive defeats. Today we faced the unbeaten league leaders - would it become three in a row? The answer to that question would be an emphatic NO. We went back to last season's basics for this one. A co-ordinated warm up and pre-match huddle were reintroduced to the Bandits routine, and from the start it was evident that this would be a good day for us. We played to our strengths and for us that means passing the ball around to feet and working hard for each other. Sounds easy, but it is something we haven't been doing too well recently. We also rediscovered our defensive mentality. With a solid back three and five midfielders neutralising most of the Yorkshire offence our new goalkeeper Andy did not have a save to make. His main challenge was the friendly abuse he was receiving from the wonderful Mick Ward and his band of supporters. The run-of-the-mill "you're shit... aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh" was eventually replaced with the "whooooooooooooaaahhh... marvellous dear" which raised a laugh on all sides and is why it receives the accolade of report header. Andy's kicking was excellent throughout and it made a nice change to be on the offensive from these for a change.
Yorkshire's only real chance of the game occured in the first half when, after a good ball from the byline raced across the six yard box, an outstretched attacker's foot just failed to connect (a la Paul Gascoigne v Germany in Euro 96). This just spurred us on and, after half an hour, Michael Scragg unleashed a shot from twenty five yards that roared into the top right corner of the net. We kept pushing to increase the lead. Matt Haywood made some good runs with the ball but, as is usually the case, the opposition seemed to think he was the football and started kicking him down. Today was more of the same. One up at half time.
We turned it on in the second half and there were many fine moves from all areas - it was only a matter of time before we increased our lead. Matt's corner floated across the area and eight yards out Jamie Harper collected the ball and slotted it home. Soon he scored his second, our third, when after a fantastic defence splitting pass from Craig, he took the ball to the edge of the area and chipped the ball over the oncoming keeper and into the net. It got even better when after yet another foul on Matt ten yards outside the corner of the area, Michael hit the kick straight in - another fantastic goal. Jamie had one other chance to get his hat-trick but it wasn't to be. Four nil it finished. Described by our esteemed webmaster as our best ever performance, this will surely silence the growing number of critics who seem to think we are a spent force. Yorkshire are an excellent team but today we showed why we are the reigning GNL champions. No man of the match, just team of the match. The glorious Brighton Bandits. Ahhh marvellous dear. |
