Cue Queen: "We are the champions my friends, and we'll keep on fighting to the end..." and boy oh boy did we. Brimming with confidence after our fantastic win in Yorkshire the belief was there that we could go all the way against Manchester. "Sir" Matthew of Haywood gave an inspirational team talk to rally the troops and after our now customary huddle we were ready for action.
The game was hard-fought from the start. Each team had a player cautioned early on, perhaps showing how committed both teams were. The first clear chance fell to Manchester when their very quick young forward broke through into the area chased by Steve Taylor who made a fantastic challenge to put the ball out for a corner. We were also pushing forward, and midway through the half Mark Hyndman attacked down the left and was brought down in the penalty area. Michael Scragg calmly slotted the ball home. 1-0 - we were on our way. A point blank save from Gary Taylor from a corner ensured we left the field a goal up.
Injury problems at half time meant myself and Mark had to come off and Matt joined Steve in the middle of defence. I hate watching when I am so nervous and the second half seemed to last about 2 hours. There were one or two players on the pitch with injuries also, but you never would have guessed. We nearly increased our lead when Michael had a 30 yard shot magnificently turned over the bar by the Manchester keeper. Because of all the emotion I don't remember all the details after that but I do know I was watching 11 Bandits playing out of their skins, repelling everything that the opposition could throw at them. Fighting for every ball, committed to every tackle, running their legs off. I felt proud that although not on the pitch I was a part of this great team and when the final whistle came we had deservedly ended the season as champions. Elation, Champagne, job done.
Everyone who has played their part in this fantastic season deserves a mention, so here goes: "Sir" Matthew Haywood, Steve Taylor, Jamie Harper, Gary Taylor, Mark Hyndman, Ben Ede, Paul Windsor, Jason Keedy, Paul Saunders, Jason Hall, Alan Bannister, John Bryan, Daryn Vanstone, Simon Hawker, Lee Towsey, Garry Ricketts, Michael Scragg, Chuck Watson and Jason "Stanley" Williams. Thanks also to those who have been regular supporters this year: Dr Nash, Brian, Steven, Richard, Andy, Fernando and Barney Bandit.
Our record this season was: Played 12 Won 8 Drawn 4 Lost 0 Goals for 21 Goals against 7, including 6 clean sheets. These statistics DO NOT LIE. We have had a FANTASTIC season and we DESERVE to be CHAMPIONS. EVERYONE should be extremely PROUD of what they have achieved this season and look forward to whatever comes next.
Yes my friends, WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS. |
